Job Overview.

University of Birmingham (UoB) Enterprises Ltd seeks candidates who have the potential to drive an ambitious strategy that will further enhance the success of our enterprise business.

UoB Enterprises Ltd has exclusive agency to deliver exploitation of the University’s intellectual property (IP); facilitate personal academic consultancy; oversee the University spin-out company portfolio and manage Birmingham Research Park, including the ‘BizzInn’ and ‘BioHub’ small business incubators.

With specialisms in life sciences, health and energy as well as research expertise in many other areas, our mission is to build on the existing company and University asset base, combine it with the expertise and knowledge of our academic staff and convert these into enhanced returns – commercial, financial and reputational.

Key Skils and Experience Required.

This opportunity could suit a candidate with high potential who seeks to build their career as a business leader, or a seasoned professional who brings experience and a track record of relevant achievement. Credible candidates will offer many of the following:

  • Senior leadership experience in an early-stage science/technology business or business incubator OR senior experience in a technology transfer function
  • Experience of the challenges and opportunities in developing science/technology innovations from research stage towards licensing and/or commercialisation
  • The ability to develop business strategy and identify business opportunities
  • Experience of finance raising for early stage businesses from seed funding onward
  • Appreciation of leading a full profit-and-loss business model and the associated management challenges
  • An inclusive and engaging leadership style, and the ability/potential to lead a team of people
  • High innate levels of energy, ambition, and drive with a focus on organisational achievement
  • Ability to engage with investors/ partners who will support the development of projects
  • Able to empathise with academic colleagues, to build sustainable relationships based on trust and cooperation

Candidates are most likely to have a science, engineering or business-related degree. An MBA or other business degree, or accounting qualifications would be valued. Masters or PhD achievements may be beneficial.
