Job Description.

Added Scientific an additive manufacturing spin-out from our partner the University of Nottingham are currently recruiting for a Research Engineer [Polymer Materials]. 

Responsibilities

Reporting to Jetting and Polymer Technologies Research Manager, this is the opportunity to work in a busy team in a small but growing company in a role with responsibilities including but not limited to:

  • Working autonomously on your own additive manufacturing research projects in jetting, material development and other techniques
  • Assisting with running and maintaining of lab and facilities including stock control and purchasing
  • Ensuring financial and resource control of projects
  • Building knowledge and expertise in the field of AM
  • Assisting with product development
  • Contributing to team meetings
  • Reporting progress internally and to clients
  • Assisting with writing proposals, estimating projects, and planning solutions
  • Assisting with writing white papers, articles, and other marketing materials
  • Assisting with presenting in webinars and other events
  • Working within good health and safety and ethical standards. Keeping COSHH records and conducting risk assessments
  • Travel to customer sites may be required occasionally

Experience and Qualifications.

Essential Attributes

  • The successful candidate must be able to work independently within a team and understand the importance of reporting progress. You must be able to manage your time effectively and know when to escalate issues and ask for assistance.
  • You will have experience of working within a lab in a research or development setting. We are particularly looking for candidates with experience and knowledge of formulating polymer resins in multi-part or photo-initiated polymerisations.
  • You should have an interest in Additive Manufacturing / 3D Printing and be open to learning new techniques and areas.
  • You should ideally be familiar with analytical procedures for characterising materials.
  • You will have strong analytical thinking and good communication skills. Strong computer literacy and knowledge of MS Word and Excel are essential.

Desirable Attributes

  • Preparing resin formulations at bench and bulk scale
  • Handling chemicals, COSHH and risk assessments
  • Chemistry – showing theoretical understanding of the role of the different elements of a formulation and the mechanism of curing
  • Practical experience of formulating and curing
  • Using analytical equipment e.g. rheometer, FTIR, hardness testing, tensile testing, microscopy, DSC
  • Using a 3D printer to produce parts (particularly SLA)
  • Designing 3D parts in CAD
  • Inkjet printing / material jetting
  • Preparing reports for internal and external consumption
  • Preparing proposals and estimates
  • Resource planning, timesheets and other project accounting functions
